Crypto Basics

The mechanics that decide whether a crypto exchange is worth using. None of it is complicated — it is just rarely explained before the signup button.

How we make money: we earn a commission when you sign up with an exchange through our links. That never changes what we recommend or how we rank — rankings follow our published review criteria and are re-checked on a fixed schedule. Read the full disclosure. Crypto risk: crypto assets are volatile and can lose value, are not FDIC-insured, and are not a bank deposit. This is not financial advice — do your own research before trading.

What a crypto exchange is

An exchange is a platform where you buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrencies. Unlike a wallet (which only holds your crypto), an exchange matches buyers and sellers and typically charges a fee for doing so.

How to buy your first coin

  1. Pick a regulated exchange — one legally available where you live. See our best exchanges.
  2. Complete identity verification (KYC) — exchanges must confirm who you are to trade.
  3. Deposit fiat — link a bank account; ACH transfers are usually free.
  4. Place a buy order — a market order buys at the current price; a limit order sets your price.

Security best practices

  • Use a hardware wallet for amounts you hold long-term; leave only trading balances on the exchange.
  • Enable 2FA on every account, ideally app-based rather than SMS.
  • Never share your seed phrase with anyone, including support.
  • Beware of "too good to be true" returns — that is the signature of a scam.

Common traps

  • High spreads on "0% fee" apps — the cost is built into the price.
  • Unregulated exchanges that are legal abroad but blocked in the US — e.g. OKX, which does not serve US customers.
  • Promising a deposit match with a brutal lock-up — read the terms.
A note on how we earn

We get paid when readers sign up with exchanges. That is exactly why this education exists — the fine print that reduces your value is the fine print we are most obliged to explain. See our full disclosure.
